Cassie hurried down to the morgue, hoping that Zack was calling them all there in order to tell them good news and not just to remind them that his autopsies had shown up nothing so far. She knew they wouldn't be able to categorically prove that the two women were mates without physical evidence that tied them together, but maybe Zack had found that.

Stranger things had happened.

She pushed through the double doors and into the room, disappointed to find that both Issac and Hadrian had beaten her there.

"Cassie's here now, are you going to stop keeping us in suspense?" Issac asked.

Zack smiled. "Cassie is going to love me."

"That's old news," Hadrian admonished him. "Make us love you too."

Zack chuckled. "Because you don't already? I categorically remember you saying that you felt like I was the closest thing to a brother you had alive on New Year's."

"I was drunk when I said that, you can't hold me to it."

Cassie smothered a laugh at the way the two of them were teasing one another, but knew there was true affection behind it. Whether Hadrian would admit it or not now, he clearly cared deeply for both Zack and Issac. While the relationship between her mates wasn't a romantic one, they had a strong bond that had started to build even before they'd met her. It was one of the reasons they all worked so well together.

"Tell me what you've found," she prompted Zack.

He held up a sealed test tube with a cotton swab inside. "Skin cells."

"You have an entire body made of skin cells, that's hardly news," Issac pointed out.

"Ah, yes, but these skin cells are different, they're from under our victim's nails."

It took a moment for the bat shifter's words to fully register, but when they did, she felt a huge sense of relief. "We might have the DNA of the killer."

"Hopefully," Zack agreed. "The only problem is that there's not very much of it. I don't know if you'll be able to test it."

She chewed her bottom lip, thinking through the ways she could possibly solve that conundrum.

"We can always try," Issac said. "It's better than ignoring the first potential piece of evidence we've got."

Cassie nodded, seeing his point. "But if we destroy it in the process, we won't be able to use it later on."

"At the rate we're going, there isn't going to be a later on," Zack pointed out.

She sighed. "All right, I can test it. But..." she trailed off, unsure if she wanted to make the suggestion she had in mind.

"But?" Hadrian prompted.

Cassie glanced at the small cotton swab and knew there was no real way around it. There was such a small amount of DNA, and the only way they were going to be able to run multiple tests on it was if they multiplied it.

She took a deep breath. "I've been working on something that might help us."

Zack raised an eyebrow. "What is it?"

"A spell that should amplify the DNA that we've got. I started
